Lieutenant General, U.S. Marine Corps (Retired) Sam Mundy is a military leader with 38 years of distinguished service in a series of demanding assignments. Throughout his career, Sam maintained a reputation for character and integrity, and the pursuit of excellence in every project. He is currently the President of Once a Marine LLC, a senior advisor for Fogbow, a consultant for Horizon Strategies, the Fozzie Miller Group, and Jones Group International, is a Senior Fellow on National Security with the Middle East Institute, and a member of the Government Advisory Board for FORTEM Technologies.
As an infantry officer he commanded at the platoon, company, battalion, Marine Expeditionary Unit, Marine Expeditionary Brigade and Naval Task Force levels. Before retiring in 2021, he served consecutively as Commander, U.S. Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command and Commander, U.S. Marine Corps Forces Central Command. Over his career, Sam deployed multiple times throughout the world, participating in disaster relief operations in the Philippines after Mount Pinatubo erupted, humanitarian relief operations in Somalia during Operation Restore Hope, and combat operations in Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom. In addition to several staff and training assignments, he studied Foreign Policy at The Brookings Institution, served as the Director of the Marine Corps Senate Liaison Office on Capitol Hill, and served as the Executive Officer to the Commander, U.S. Central Command.
His strengths as a team builder and crisis manager helped bring order out of chaos during combat operations and in various conflicts over the past two decades. Sam also provided vision and guidance to organizations he led, enabling them to attain new goals, create new structures and develop next generation capabilities. In addition to serving in the Middle East, he lived in Bahrain for two years, traveling extensively throughout the region and gaining key insights into the culture.
In retirement, Sam enjoys supporting military benevolent charities such as Hope for the Warriors, and the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation. He has also been an occasional contributor to several national publications.
Sam holds a bachelor's degree from Auburn University and a Master of Business Administration degree from Averett University. He is married, lives in Saint Petersburg, Florida and has two daughters and three granddaughters.
